The magic of "clear all"!

It should be obvious, but I bet that many of the people having lag, battery, and heat issues are not doing "clear all" (recent apps -> clear all) on a regular basis.

Two cautionary tales:

  1. I just noticed significant lag in the camera after tapping the shutter button... rather than get upset about it or try to diagnose it, I just did a "clear all", and the camera is now very fast again. I have no idea what other recent thing I was doing that may have had this affect, but it frankly doesn't matter.
  2. Over the last few days, I've been doing a "clear all" right before I lock the phone. My stand-by battery performance has been amazing... it was already good, now it's amazing.

On my old Note 2, doing "recent apps -> clear all" took forever... it was just one more struggle with my poky phone. On this phone it takes less than a second, and it can have an immediate positive effect on the phone.

I do that often and it does speed things up a bit.

Interesting thing though, on my G2, there is an option to set times for it to auto clear. That option is not available on the G4.

I do it as well but very infrequently. I should start making it a habit of doing it right before I start passing out and drop the phone on my head in bed....this happens very infrequently too, lol! :D

I always thought that was advised against because then it takes longer for the apps (that were stored there) to open from a complete closed state then if they were stored in recent memory, and I always read that it used more power to reopen them once closed too. Or was that just a KK and earlier thing?

I wondered when someone was going to say that. I've heard that as well. Let's ignore it and go right ahead and Clear All....they're our recents to do with as we choose, after all. I'm going to clear mine now. :)
Also, there must be a reason for that Clear All option.

Where do you find these settings... New to Android and just getting to know my way around

The recent apps button at bottom right....brings up the Clear All the recent apps option. :)

Don't get me wrong I clear things on an individual basis from there very often, mainly the apps known to be ram and battery hogs. But rarely do I do a clear all. *shrug* different strokes...

No problem then, so long as you're clearing out the ram/battery hogs. I just find that I can't be bothered to scroll through the list of apps and clear them individually.

I think I understood your point from the rest of the post: Clear All can help sort out some issues.

But the beginning of your post, to me, reads the opposite way?

Making it, for instance,

"battery, and heat issues are NOT doing "clear all" '

would seem more consistent with what I think is your point, unless I misunderstood.

Anyways, I have started using Clear All to try and "calm down" the phone. I'm doing it more than just a reboot. Usually it has been cool in the morning when I take it off the charger. But it was warm this morning, so something had kept working hard overnight.

So maybe a Clear All before bed would have helped.

I did do a CA today before going out for a while and using MapMyRide. I wanted to maximize my battery life, and didn't care if loading an app took a little longer.

Actually, you thought correctly. It's NOT good practice. That's why it was on the G2 but removed on later models.

Oh crap, that's my mistake. I'll edit that right away -- I meant to say "are not doing 'clear all'".

I do the clear all everyday, BUT I do not go into settings and clear the (Storage) - Cache, that is done once a month. I also do Smart Cleaning once a week.

Clearing cache files regularly is not only unnecessary, it's counterproductive. Unless there's a problem, they should be left alone.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Android since v1.0. Linux since 2001.

Although there's a performance benefit to leaving recent apps "running", in that you don't have the hit of trying to start up the apps again... but if there are hogs (such as facebook, maps, and who knows what else) that you aren't using all the time, then clearing them away will "calm" the phone down. I guess it really depends on your usage patterns.

I do smart cleaning once a week, and/or just restart the phone.

That is as stated on top of clearing the ram and power hungry apps when not in use, get in do what I need and close them.
