So, we have all seen some complaining around the Epic 4g sub-forum lately. Who's going to root and why? Also, if you know of an app that you could use to fix the "software issues" that people are complaining about (eg. allowing font customizations), please do share ;)

IF we root can we put htc sense UI on the Epic? THat would be sweet :) if its possible will all the other features of the phone still work?(like 4g and 720p video record).

probably not. Don't get your hopes up for it. Most likely, you'll see AOSP and Touchwiz ROMs

Mostly to tether, but mostly on GP because I want to get full control and ability out of this expensive piece of hardware.

Definitely tethering for me, but I also want to check out custom ROMs when they'll be out.

I plan on rooting because I have a sick obsession with cell phones and like to be able to switch things up on a regular basis. And because I want to run AOSP on the Epic at least for a little while.

Hybrids for the BB Tour I used to own. OC Kernels and patching for my Pre/Pixi. Custom ROMs for my girlfriends Hero. And now, custom ROMs for my Epic.

I thought the Epic included mobile hotspot. What type of tethering do you need root for?

I believe that hotspot feature requires the $30 add on per month to use, while rooting allows users to tether for free.

I only really do wired, I'm not sure of the status of that as I'll be a first time Android user, but coming from WM6, I need to know my tethering is stealthed from Sprint. But, like I said, I want to exploit the phone to max capability.

I'm going to ask this, thinking about coming from Pre - know basically nothing about Android.
I also thought MHS was included - paying $30 is not included in my mind.

So,
Do you have to route to get tethering?? I use MHS thru Preware. Had tried the mytether, didn't work, cost money to download, was bad idea. I have mine up and running and love it for travel.

You have to root to tether without using the sprint hotspot app, which they charge for.

Mytether was incredibly annoying with the whole bait and switch deal, and it didn't even work properly half the time anyway.

PDAnet works without root over bluetooth and USB. Wifi tether needs root. The Sprint app requires $30 a month
