Benefits of Unlocking your device:
Enables you to use it with another GSM provider
Enables you to use a local prepaid SIM card when traveling instead of roaming with your current provider.
Adds to the resale value of your phone
Freedom to use any GSM device on the network of your choice
Does Unlocking void my Warranty?
This has been a question asked over and over again with different opinions. In the past, some phones needed to be opened, software tampered with in order to unlock it and that obviously would void the warranty. If you call your provider and ask them the question, they will most likely say that it does, because that's what they are trained to say. However, asking around and from personal experience will result in many folks telling you that unlocked device exchanges with carriers are not a problem.
Why would I pay to have my device unlocked? Carriers do it for free
This is true for most carriers, they will indeed provide you an unlock code but often times it takes days for them to get it to you. Also, most carriers have a criteria which must be met first. ie: Been a customer more then 30 days, have no account balance etc. They reserve the right to decline giving you an unlock code at their discretion even if it's just someone having a bad day at work.
Once I Unlock my device, can I use it with any GSM provider worldwide?
For the most part yes, although you have to consider the frequencies in which your device works on and also consider that carriers, may also lock out some devices from other networks.
A good case for this is the recently released Droid Pro. While it is a Global device and can be unlocked, it will not be able to attach itself to the AT&T GSM network due to the restrictions Verizon has placed on the device.
