Things To Move Before Rooting, Help???

Hello,

I have made it a habit to try and search for answers to my questions before posting. I found some but most of them say do it this way and others say do it that way.

Can someone please take the time to explain. I have a MyTouch4G Ver 2.2.1

Here is the question...I want to root the phone what are some things that I should move before rooting? Example...do I need to move pics/videos and text/email messages?

If yes, where should I move them to...SD or computer.
