Things to try with Galaxy stuck at Samsung logo before factory reset

Hi, this question indeed has been asked already, but I got something a bit different happening here.

The other day the phone just froze and tried to reboot as it usually would, but it got stuck on the Samsung logo. Few hours later, the phone got really, really warm.

Whenever it tries to boot it stays on the Samsung logo for a few seconds, but then the soft keys light up and the screen dims a bit - it's almost like it boots normally but the screen doesn't change.

I tried the usual: wiping cache, battery pull and rebooting without sd card, now I'm just wondering is there anything left to try before wiping data/factory reset. The phone isn't rooted and all system updates are turned off, newest app was downloaded weeks ago.

Have you tried booting it in Safe mode? What device do you have?

I haven't, how do I enter safe mode? It's galaxy S2 running jelly bean.

I've tried this multiple times, it didn't boot into anything at all.
Anything else left to try?

Google is your friend! HERE'S a search result. There seems to be several ways to get into Safe mode on the S2. Try a few and see how it goes.

Yup, already googled it. To this day I couldnt make it enter safe mode.
I did the factory reset, which unfortunately did the data wipe along with it, lost everything but at least the phone is working again :) Thanks for the help!
