Let me start this by saying that I am not new to android or computers but have not kelt up with the latest tech which is why I am here.

I am starting back to school in Sept and currently have a Asus notebook and a Nexus 4G phone. I have been thinking a awhile about getting a tab to make life easier for the most part as I do more on my phone than I do on the PC anymore. In March I bought an Ipad but quickly returned it as I am not an apple fan.

I am curious if a tab would be a good chnice and if so what does everyone suggest. I need access to wireless networks since I do not have internet at home (can teather with the Nexus though). Will my apps that I have bought transfer to the tab like they do when I buy a new phone? Lots of insight needed please.

hmm... us xoom is GED or google experience device. this is used for testing developments with the honeycomb os so xoom gets updates as soon as they're available. other manufacturers should also release their updates soon thereafter. asus transformer so far has released timely updates. the lag with the update release would depend on company commitment, and how much the stock os has been modified. samsung galaxy afaik would have touchwiz on its 10.1; this mod plus the not-so-good update history of samsung makes me not like it much.

build and form-wise, xoom is built like a tank. i dropped mine twice already and it has dents but the thing works perfectly. metal feels very sturdy. makes it thicker and heavier though. others have clunkier builds. samsung looks very stylish. thinnest and lightest. so aesthetically pleasing. i could probably break it into two plastic tablet halves too.

screen-wise: i really do not have problems with mine. but i am aware some people criticize xoom's screen especially as against samsung's. i have compared xoom screen with samsung, acer iconia and transformer screens. better for you to go to a store and check them all out. this advice goes for all parameters cited.

xoom has hdmi out, microSD, micro USB. no micro usb charging, so just proprietary charger but this is countered by a blazing charging time.

microSD and usb access via otg host cable which can be bought in ebay for $3 would allow expandability and data transfer flexibility.
