Thinking about doing a factory reset. Tips to get running again quickly?

I have an ongoing issue with getting a loading screen when I go to the home screen from app. It only happens everyonce in a while but it is really annoying when it does.

I am thinking about doing a Factory Reset to try and start clean again. I know this will wipe out all apps and settings so I was wondering what is the easiest way to get up and running again.

Will my apps all re-download once I put in my e-mail address in the setup portion at the begging or will I have to manually download everything again? Also wondering how paid apps would work?

I am also wondering if when it resets does it keep the updates it has gotten such as the Froyo update and recent maintainence updates?

Any way to easily restore settings?

Anything else I need to consider when doing a full wipe like this? I have never done one to a mobile phone before. Thanks for any help you can provide!

Any updates you have downloaded and installed such as froyo and the maintenance update will remain in tact when you do a factory reset. (You don't have to re-download or install them in other words.)

When you sign in with your gmail profile during the set up process google remembers all your paid apps but not the free ones. Just head to the market place and click on your paid apps and hit "install". I personally just wrote down all the free apps that I downloaded that I wanted to reinstall.

Just make sure you:

  • Check your text messages and see if you want to save any pictures and video people have sent you.
  • If you have a note pad program, make sure you save/write down your notes.
  • Make a back up of you internal phone memory and SD card just in case things get funky on you and some thing happens. So you don't lose your data. (pics, vids, music. etc)

Other then that, it's pretty simple. Just head into settings and do a factory wipe.

Also a bajillion people are going to recommend "app brain" for you to download to easily restore your apps. I don't personally use it, but I hear it's quite good.

Before you do a factory reset if your problem happens after you hit the home screen button you might want to try clearing the data and cache of HTC Sense. This will wipe out your home screen setting only and may fix your issue if you haven't tried it. Hit menu>settings>applications>manage applications>running apps>HTC Sense then just clear everything and see is it helps.

Thanks for the tip about clearing cache and data on HTC Sense. I am trying that now and hopefully that will work!
