even with the 4g off how bad is the battery?

It depends on your set up and use. On my stock battery, with screen brightness at 25%, GPS off, moderate to heavy use I got 12 hours with 30% left.

To be honest, I returned my phone because it would only last me 5-6 hours. I did use it heavily however, with a few hundred text messages throughout the day, emailing, browsing, and angry birds when I'm bored. But I also used Juice Defender, turned off 4 g, had screen brightness down below 25% (couldn't even see the screen outside), and pretty much every other way to conserve the battery. I bought the extended battery but it was wayy too bulky and I returned everything (even managed to get the restocking fee waived)

I bought my friends Droid X for a ridiculously cheap price and I love it. Nothing compared to the speed of the thunderbolt but it'll last me until the Bionic comes out. Oh and the battery life is sooo much better without any tweaking at ALL!! I just loaded my phone and do the same thing I did with the thunderbolt without lowering brightness, no juice defender, or any of those other needed to do things. And now i'm not afraid to use my Droid X while always constantly looking at the battery hoping it'll last me a few more hours until I get to a place where I can charge it haha.

thanks playing wit the bolt makes me want the phone but hearing all this bad stuff about the battery makes it hard to buy if i have to worry about the battery

What does moderate to heavy use consist of?

Four widgets running but not Facebook or Twitter. Three hours of web use, 20 emails, 10 texts, and random playing on phone. Screen on and off for 6 hours.

While my Thunderbolt does last me a normal day, with 30% by the time I recharge, I did get the extended battery.

100% brightness here, all imaginable widget/apps running, all radios on, etc. Been "unplugged" for 3.5 hours now, still on stock battery. And I don't get lower than 98% of battery power. Hehe

i get 9-14 hours on the stock battery with moderate use.
4g on all the time auto brightness, steaming music, fb and twitter on 2 hour sync. texts ims emails, some web. and games. so i am very happy.

I don't live in a 4G area and I get the same battery life on my thunderbolt that I had on my Droid.
