Thinking about switching from stratosphere to droid 3...thoughts?

So, I got the stratosphere and while its a solid device physically, I've been plagued by defective hardware, not just once but twice. At this point, amazon is offering a one time replacement phone offer, where i'd get to choose a different handset, paying the difference in price.

Previously I dismissed the droid 3. I was bummed it didn't have 4g and only had 512 mb of ram. That and the encrypted bootloader I wasn't a fan of, since I had the og droid. However, I only enter a 4g area occasionally right now, the droid 3 appears to have a great custom rom scene, and the stratosphere was just fine with 512 mb of ram.

Would any of you ever consider a "downgrade" like this? Also, how much better is the droid 3's qwerty from the og's? I tried to switch back to the og while I was waiting for my replacement phone and noticed that I just couldn't use the qwerty anymore: it was awful. That and well...the phone wouldn't turn on. :p

How's the camera, I've heard mixed things about it being tinged blue. Also, how bugfree is the software, I've also heard mixed things regarding stability.

Thanks in advance!

Well, the D3 has a dual-core OMAP CPU, so that's an upgrade from the Stratosphere. I believe that the blue tinge was fixed with the OTA update delivered in September (I bought my phone in mid-October, so I never had that problem.) I use a couple of third-party camera apps that are great anyway, rather than the stock camera, and they were worth a couple cups of venti drinks at Starbucks. (Camera FX/Pro and HDR Camera +).

My phone is not rooted, completely stock and is stable as anything - I have had to pull battery one time in eight weeks. I don't love the custom interface, but it's fine with animations turned off, and at some point I'll probably grow so tired of it that I'll switch to a third party launcher for good. I think only the Moto agenda widget is at all useful to me, and there are plenty of third party replacements for that.

In my experience, the keyboard is great, the phone is stable. I should say that I was also very interested in a world phone, and very interested in staying with 3G, as I had a terrible experience with data outages with the Bionic for the 12 days I owned it (and there was just another data outage the last day or so.)

I'm glad to hear yours has been stable and things have been fixed. The D3's definetly in the running, especially if the rezound doesn't drop in price :p

It isn't worth the "downgrade." You may not realize it but 4G connectivity is spoiling you rotten. You will endlessly kick yourself if you downgrade from a 4G phone to a 3G phone; I know because I have a 4G LTE hotspot. You should definite consider the Rezound unless you you have to have a keyboard.

That and, in most cases 3g seems to load pages "ok" enough. *shrugs*

I also am never in a 4g area. I am often near a wifi connection which is faster than 4g. The droid 3 isn't perfect, but it is the best phone I've ever had.

The camera doesn't have a blue tint, but it does often take a picture out of focus. I hold the button until it's in focus and that helps, but it's annoying sometimes.

I'd do it. The hardware (especially the keyboard) on the D3 is first-rate and the phone is very quick and stable since the last big OS upgrade. It used to have some real bugs, like the blue tint to pics, etc., but they're a distant memory.

thats what I'm thinking, now i just have to wait for amazon to redrop the price: it's at 99 bucks again...
