Anything I should heed before attempting to root? I'm reading all guides fully, but any other words of advice before I move on?

Its not as intimidating as it sounds, just always fallow direction, if you are going to flash a custom rom, aosp has very good instructions for first timers, just go to the first page of the thread

BACKUP FIRST!!!!

Use a program such as TitaniumBackup, then backup your sdcard to your PC, then in recovery do a backup (called a nandroid).

You have no idea how much time and effort you will save if you have issues compared to the time it takes to backup first.

DO NOT USE THE FACTORY RESET OPTION IN YOUR PHONES SETTINGS!!!!

You can do a factory reset in recovery, though it is almost never necessary, but NEVER do it when your phone is booted up and running after you have installed a custom ROM.

Other than that, follow directions to the "t".

I recommend you flash new roms through the recovery. Do not use Rom Manager. From the number of people who have reported bricking using this method, it looks like the V is still not fully supported.

However, you WILL want to download ROM Manager to install the Clockwork Mod Recovery, and to make a nandroid backup. The backup just saved my butt like 5 minutes ago.

Clockworkmod can be downloaded and installed from lots of places. Once downloaded to your sdcard, it takes a single line in Terminal Emulator (available from the market) to flash a recovery:

flash_image recovery /sdcard/NAME_OF_RECOVERY.img

Then you boot into recovery, and perform a nandroid backup.

I don't suggest using ROM Manager for anything until the manifests are properly updated by aosp.

As long as you don't do a factory reset through your phone, its very simple to get out of brick/bootloop, just like posted above, make a backup once you get a recovery installed, rom manager is a simple way to do it. Alaso if you can't get your phone to boot after flashing a rom, turn your phone off and while holding the volume down and home key, power up your phone, it will boot in to recovery, and you can restore a backup from there
