I got tired of waiting for the official GB update, so I decided late last night to start the root process on my Infuse. Now, keep in mind that I am not a programmer, nor do I play one on TV.
I read a bunch of articles on this web site, and also on xda-developers. I also watched 3-4 videos on Youtube related to the rooting of the Infuse. Pretty much the common steps are as follows:
1. Download the Superoneclick program to your desktop/laptop. (Note: I have a Windows XP, and not a Mac.) Extract all files from the .zip folder.
2. Unmount your external SD card
3. In Settings, check off USB Debugging.
4. Plug one end into the micro usb port on the phone, and then the other end into a USB port on your Desktop/Laptop.
5. Launch the Superoneclick program. Click the Root button, and let the Magic happen.
In the write-ups and the videos, the program does its thing, and presto....Rooted. Then you can move on to Backup, and installing custom ROM's.
I tried running 2 different versions of the Superoneclick program. Neither worked. What I got was a screen that launched, and upon clicking root I saw that some deamon job was not running, and that the program was going to launch it. Then...nothing. The program just hangs, my CPU spikes, and I eventually have to kill it using Task Manager. Needlees to say, not a good start to my Rooting experience.
I have found there to be some gaps or inconsistencies in the instructions that I have read, which may be contributing to my failures. They are as follows:
Some folks mention that you need to download Kies. My understanding of Kies is that it's a piece of software that lets your phone talk or synch data to your desktop.
How does downloading Kies further along, or allow, the root process? Are there add'l drivers included in the Kies? I did not download this, because many of the things I read did not say it was necessary, nor did the videos on Youtube allude to this. Some say "you must download the drivers". However that is a rather vague statement. There are drivers in the Superoneclick program. Are those the drivers people are alluding to?
Some folks mentioned that there is a setting in Superoneclick that needs to be changed for the process to work on the Infuse. I can't remember the name of the setting (I'm at work doing this from memory), but I do remember some of the options: Gingerbreak (or Gingerbeak), pneuter, or Auto. The default was Auto. The suggested setting was pneuter. I tried that to no avail.
So I will try again tonight, to see if I have any further success. If anybody knows of any suggestions, or sees something that I might be doing incorrectly, please let me know.
