Tmobile to Project FI make sense???

So I just got my Nexus 5x in the mail and looked up some "first things to do" articles and came across Project FI. I've not followed any news on Project FI so I was bummed to find out about the $199 deal if bought through the playstore (I looked there too when shopping and it wasn't even mentioned!).

anyways, I digress,I'm looking at it now as I'm always down for a good deal and I'd like to support such a cool service. I have been doing a lot of reading up on it this morning and i think I fit the niche well... I'm an idividual with one phone and I'm not concerned with coverage as I'm already fine with T mobile and I already have an eligible phone. For me, it really comes down to how much data will I need. I currently have T Mobile and their $60 simple choice unlimited talk/text and unlimited 4g LTE data, so data consumption is one thing I have not paid any attention to at all. But this is the one facet of the service that really makes or breaks it for me. Will I save money, or will it be even more?

So I check my usage stats on Tmobiles website and for the past 6 months I probably averaged around 4gb per month. My heaviest month was 4.5gb, lowest month was 2.8gb.

However, I don't really trust these numbers. Since I had unlimted data, I was super lazy about turning on wi fi when I got home. I am on the road a lot during the day for work so I always turned off wi-fi while I was away from home to try to conserve battery life. I would always forget to turn wi-fi back on when I got home since I wasn't really concerned with it due to my unlimited plan. I'd go a week easy sometimes never enabling wifi. So I know these stats have to be inflated.

Many times in my life I made a decision I've later regretted not having thought out every angle in advance. So, I'm hoping a few people here might be able to provide some angles I am not thinking about?

Any advice and experiences are welcomed!

If you are paying $60 a month on T-Mobile and have an unlimited plan, I wouldn't fuss with that at all. 4G of data will run you $60 and change on Fi... so pretty much where you are at on T-Mobile. Now, if, like you say, you might have a lot less because you turn off Wifi a lot, your bill would be less.

One thing to consider... if you go to Fi, don't like it, and come back, you are going to lose that $60/UL plan and have to move to a current one.

Fi's good, but you are on the knife edge of where it makes sense and I would never recommend someone on an grandfathered UL plan move off to a metered plan. If something crazy happens and you crank out 10G or so on Fi, that's a $120 tally.

yeah, aptly put... I'm on the "knife's edge" between the two. I guess that's why I'm having a hard time pulling the plug on T Mobile.

thanks for the insight!

Yeah... I mean, Fi is wicked cool... T-Mobile service in my area is great, and Google has the auto VPN connection services for those WiFi hotspots (which is rumored to be coming to all Nexus phones by the way)... easy billing, good online tools.

But I have a grandfathered UL plan (2 lines for $100)... well, that and the fact that between me and my wife, we average about 20G a month, so I'd be looking at a bill close to $240/m.

You're definitely at the crossroads of an important decision. I'm on Fi and absolutely love it, but I hardly cross 1GB mark and travel overseas. For me it makes perfect sense. Not sure I'd give up unlimited plan at $60.

damn!!! so wanted to get of the carrier grid... but when i looked at my current plan and the new plans on offer at T mobile i knew I had something good. I think I remember the new unlimited plans is unlimited LTE... which mine is. Damn. I guess I should be happy I have a good deal with TMO and now I'm going to cancel jump since I don't even have a phone that qualifies for an upgrade or insurance.

I'm going to be religious about using wi-fi when available this month to get a better idea of my actual data usage.

thanks for the replies!
