to an email, attach a photo I take immediately - is the photo stored somewhere?

attach...
select photo app
take the photo
approve the photo
send the email.

Is the photo still on the phone somewhere, and if so, where?

Look in the camera app, in settings, for the storage location. It's probably in /DCIM/<somewhere>, (DCIM = Digital Camera IMages - standard for phones and digital cameras.)

Welcome to Android Central! Or it could be in the /Pictures directory as well. That's where the Screenshots directory usually is, along with folders for messaging apps.
