To hangout or not to hangout?

Just updated Hangouts and it prompted me to use it for texting. I currently use Textra and it gets the job done. Should I use Hangouts instead? Does it support Emoji as a text Message and not send them as an MMS (and does its version look as good as the stock messenger's emoji)? Do I have the dreaded, and doomed, Google+ to use it?

As a fan of most google apps, I tried hangouts and after a few weeks I switched back to the stock messenger app. I have no answer to your question about emoji/mms.

It doesn't send emoji's as mms, After using it for like 30 minutes, I switched back to Go SMS Pro, which has way more features and all of the iOS emojis. Although if I didn't have a 3rd party SMS app I'd probably use Hangouts vs Stock only because it has emojis.
