i had my evo for a couple of week and been looking in to rooting it. But i dont no much about what rooting does? I have alot of the stock app i do not want one there like sprint nav, amozon mp3 so on that i want to get rid of . By me rooting my evo will i be able to do that. Plus with a rooted phone do you still get the updates from HTC and Sprint like froyo when it comes out

You will still get updates...which could actually take away your rooted phone priviledges. The latest update from HTC did that. Just in case you don't know, android is like the little brother of linux...which of course is the younger brother of Unix. With a rooted phone, you're giving your apps and yourself root access (which is actually higher than administrator access). If you come from the windows world, you know how administrator is the highest access you can have, well, in the linux world, it's the 2nd highest. If your phone is rooted, you can do things like have a wireless tethering system and other stuff that will allow you to "maneuver around" the $30 that sprint charges for hotspot access.

think of rooting as giving you the ability to almost fully customize the phone. you can apply roms, themes and extra utilities as previously mentioned. though, with all the good that can be had there is also some possible negatives. you will void your warranty while rooted. this can be reversed in most cases by unrooting which is usually done by installing an official update.zip file. think of it as reformatting you hard drive on your computer and reinstalling windows, a clean start. also with the root access you may do harm when using certain apps or capabilities. for example i can overclock my droid's processor from 550 Mghz to 1.2 Ghz (good) but if i don't watch it or set profiles to manage the overclock state (temp range) i could potentially fry my cpu (bad). when it comes down to it im going to quote uncle ben from spider man "with great power comes great responsibility" haha. if you plan on rooting, start slow. get root access and try a few things but always make sure you ask whatever questions that relate to it before you go through the process. the worst thing is not knowing what to do and not being able to get an answer as to how to fix it ASAP. i know that first hand haha. good luck

yes good knowledge is only great if you can reverse it, dont do anything till you know you can go back to the way it was, "unrevoked.com" is trying to reroot us that have done the ota update, my phone was rooted i did the update and now its not, if you use"unrevoked.com" (after they get the patch fixed) all you will have to do is "unistall" the app and reboot your phone and you wont void warranty, and think if you got insurence and your phone crashes and lets say you cant fix your phone and you rooted it, then just break it, lol thats one way around voiding the warranty. lol iv thought this through. hahaa...

thanks for all the great info. I need to look in to doing a full root with my mac. i may try to use unrevoked.com see how it works it may be easer

unrevoked WAS a 30 second root, but if you have done the june 29th OTA update on your evo, then the "unrevoked.com" hack wont work for you, BUT if you havent, then you can use the "unrevoked2 its the v2 virsion, which gives you everything the OTA fixes from sprint but also lets you keep root. so for now if you have done the OTA update then we are waiting for unrevoked to realease the next hack, which is coming, im fallowing them on tweeter.

That would be nice to have something like that for the Hero.

i hear ya. there was somthing like that for the droid but then ever since the 2.1 update it will not work. now i have to use rsd lite in order to root which is kind of a PITA plus somewhat risky if i accidentally pull the usb cord out too early...... then ill have a nice, expensive gorilla glass and metal paper weight

like everyone else im waitin for the new root to come out. i hella enjoyed the ability to give free wifi lol...really easy process, any clue when the new version will come out??

I updated without realizing the new update killed the rooting ability. What version are we on now? I'm assuming i'd hear about a new root from this site?

um no new root out yet, im still fallowing unrevoked on tweeter. last update was july 4th they said no ETA but its in the works. for the evo.. um i have a question, my buddy wanted to know if you do a factory data reset if it will reset the ota update. i told him no, does anyone know the truth? i figure it wont reverse the firmware update, anyone know?

I'm planing on getting the Droid X when it comes out and I was wondering what I should do about rooting my device *If one is released before 2.2 release, should I root my device as soon as one is released or wait until 2.2 gets released and wait for a root for it?

Also I read that after rooting a device you can reverse root by flashing a official update rom, since updates come OTA how would I be able to save a rom update to be able to reverse a root or is there another way that I have not found out about?

I am a long time Windows Mobile user for a number of year and the switch will be a little of a learning curve, since WM devices required you to flash devices from a .img that you ran from your pc, backup of a image was simple and restoring from a HSPL update usually involved a relocker patch.

Any information would be appreciated.. Wanna get educated now and not be stepping in blind:cool: ..

I never thought I'd care about root until I started hearing about custom ROMs and overclocking the CPU. It was totally worth it. Root at your own risk!
