To root or not to root?

Ok so, I have been on the edge of rooting my eris for a couple of weeks and can not decide which way to go. If I do it and want to get a new phone later on, how do I get it back to stock 2.1 with sense? I mostly want someone to convince me to do it and help me so i dont mess my phone up.

There is actually a ROM that you can install called Flashback21 that installs the stock Eris OS and removes the custom Amon's Recovery, restoring the stock Recovery.

It's located here: [ROM][10/20/2010]FlashBack21 v1 -Return to Factory Stock - UPDATED - xda-developers

As for rooting, I would avoid any process that would install the Clockwork custom recovery - it's fine for most other phones, but, for whatever reason, several Eris users have ended up with bricked phones after using Clockwork. There are two methods that I prefer; one has more steps, but the documentation is thorough; the other is simpler, but isn't well documented. They are:

The well-documented one: Universal Eris Root for Dummies! - Android Forums

The easier one: Universal 1 Click Eris App Apk - No PCs, No Scripts Needed, EASY - Android Forums

If you use the easier one, you can always read through the steps in the first, starting with the fourth post, to see exactly how to install a custom ROM.

If you are going to install a custom ROM, I suggest starting with one called xtrSENSE. xtrSENSE looks and works almost exactly like the stock Eris, except it leaves a lot more space for applications and data - you'll have over 100 MB free when you start fresh - and runs faster when the screen is on and the phone is active, but slower when the display is off and the phone is idle, giving both performance when you need it but better battery life as well. You can find xtrSENSE here, along with a lot of information about it: [ROM][GPL][11/5/2010] xtrSENSE4.6.5 [cache2cache,apps2sd,oc,jit]-HTC Sense - xda-developers

Good luck with whatever you decide. Feel free to ask more questions if you have them. By the way, there is a rooting forum for the eris here as well: http://forum.androidcentral.com/htc-droid-eris-rooting-roms-hacking/
