To root or not.

I just got my replacement evo and its still on 2.1. Should I root or just get 2.2 Any thoughts?

Yup. Benefits for rooting completely outweigh the risks.

IMO just update to 2.2. when you root you take a risk and open yourself up to problems and issues. personally i don't need the aggravation for such a mission critical daily use all encompassing device as my phone - especially when it operates perfectly as is.

I think the best thing that root offers is are kernels.
The stock htc kernel rom is slow and battery consuming. Some of these latest kernels bring insane battery life.


I say root.
Install a pretty non-experimental rom that's good for daily use.

Infact, you can always just get the rooted version of the 2.2 HTC ROM.

I never bothered to root the EVO, it could cause problems in the long run if not done the right way and the warranty will be void

Oh and another thing. You can always unroot if need be. Also, nand backups restores your phone to exactly the same way you left it... So it's almost impossible to brick your phone.

If you need to give your phone back to Sprint, then you can always just giver it back rooted. Most Sprint reps won't even know the difference. Again, you can always umroot.

I am running fresh ego with over the air froyo I can't root the phone yet right? I wanted to put cyanogen on it. So rooting is better for battery life?

There is no reason to not root and it always makes the phone much more powerful and fun. You can always go back to stock if you want. But I've never heard of anyone who rooted and then liked going back to stock. That's your answer right there... root.
