To use, or not to use a task manager...

I have been using a task manager for the last couple of years that I've had an android device...I would like input as to whether or not you do or don't use a task manager and why.

Not to use it. Android 2.2 and higher has built in task manager and using third party ones is not advised.

I think it's good to use 1 under the right circumstances... The issue why some people discourage using a task manager is because sometimes you or whoever will force close an app that the system called to perform a task. For example, your weather app might open itself to update "randomly" but if you close it while it's being told to run it's task, it may continue re-opening until such task is finished. The constant open/close would hurt your battery slightly.

However, some apps never really close when you "exit" them, I've seen a lot of games do this. This can slow down the system but it depends what those apps are doing and how much memory they're using.

There's no real answer to the question, I think it's more circumstantial.

I really have mixed emotions about it. I'm pretty sure I save a little bit of battery life when I have it uninstalled because it's not constantly running in the background. But I like being able to shut down apps that may be slowing my phone down. I uninstalled my task manager this morning, and i'm going to run for a few days without it and see how it goes. My first android phone was a Samsung moment, and then an HTC Hero, and you almost absolutely had to have a task manager with those phones because of the lack of RAM. This phone doesn't have that problem :)

I used one in Jan. of this year when I first got this phone. (My first Android) The only reason I used it is because they were all over the Market. So I thought it was a necessity for Androids. Then as I became more familiar with this OS, and did some research on the subject, I decided to 86 the Task Killer. My battery life is great without it. I convinced my step father to get rid of his on the EVO, and he has never been happier. But he had it set on AGGRESSIVE (killing everything when the screen goes blank) which defeats the whole purpose of battery conservation. None the less, he is better off without it.

Now, I will say, IMO Task Killers can be useful for certain people who set them up exactly for their needs. I don't run games or apps that suck power if left running in the background, so for me NO Task Killer works best.

Well my Optimus is running great without a Task Manager so far lol. I'm just so used to one. I like trying new things though. Thanks for the input!

As stated before it's advised not to use one, but I have one installed that I have set to only run when I open it, which I use to kill game apps. When I run one in particular with my phone oced to 864 it sometimes still freezes the app so I kill it and everything goes back to normal. So my opinion is if you know something is hogging resources in the back and it won't reopen after you kill it, they can be beneficial. But I'm pretty sure there's also a built in one though I've never played with it as I like the icon on my home screen.
