To wait or not to wait for 4G phone

My storm 2 is very buggy. The VZW Fascinate fascinates me. The question I have is with the 4G LTE rollout sometime 2010/2011, who is waiting for next gen 4G phones, and who is getting the Fascinate.

Your advice is appreciated. (I hate buyer's remorse!);)

All up to you honestly. If you can wait for a 4G phone (probably Q1 2011) and you live in an area that will definitely have 4G around the time you get a 4G phone then go for it. If not, then there's always the Fascinate, Droid X, Incredible and the Droid 2. They will definitely last until 4G is out.

And I'd get a 1 year contract if you plan on getting a phone now.

4G is cool but i dont see it starting up in a grand scale. I'am sure it will be a sloooow roll out. And i am sure big red will want to charge you extra for 4G service even if you dont have it availible. Unless your sitting in a 4G hot spot and you will be slinging data back and forth i would wait for you next cycle to jump on the 4G wagon. Thats my 2 cents on 4G.

Yeah, I think unless you're in a major metropolitan area, you're not going to see LTE anytime soon. I'm quite comfortable signing a 2-year contract on a 3G phone, and in fact, I won't be surprised if my area *still* doesn't have LTE in 2012.

And as Archerdude pointed out, LTE will cost more, and will almost certainly be capped. So even if I could get LTE today, I'm not sure I would.

Here are my reasons for not waiting on 4G and pulling the trigger on the Fascinate:

1) Location: I live in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. I don't see Verizon rushing to get 4G service down here.

2) Technology: I want to give Verizon & phone manufacturers some time to iron out any wrinkles in the implementation of LTE before I buy a 4G phone.

3) Cost: I seem to remember reading something that said 4G data plans would be $59. I'm paying for three unlimited data plans as it is, and at $30 a pop, I really don't want those to double in price.

When Verizon gets the 4G network running uniformly and smoothly across Louisiana, and when they don't demand payment in blood, I'll probably make the switch.

As noted time and time again even back in storm1 days don't except lte phones till maybe 4quarter 2011. It will be the data cards first then phones. And the Droid X is a better choice

I am sticking with Fascinate although I like Droid X too. I am almost sure it will be some time before the LTE network is made available in NH.

Thanks for all the great responses!

Na, both phones have their pros and cons. It just depends on whatever fits your needs better. I, for one, like the fascinate a great deal more.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion... (And the debate rages on in other threads.) But, here's how I look at it: While I agree that the X is certainly intriguing, it's end of life, according to Verizon, is imminent; whereas, the Fascinate will likely continue being updated (for at least a month or two - ha-) after the X.

Thanks, everyone, for weighing in on my 4G question. I am all in on the one year contract!

I was thinking that same thing. I dont really see VZW rolling out LTE to Richmond VA anytime soon. Not really a concern here. Yes Sprint does have its WiMax here but the coverage is very spotty.

It will be 2 years at least (mark my words) before LTE phones are actually visibly different from the current crop of smartphones. LTE is such an open ended specification (and actually just an extension of 3g, *not* 4g according to the ITU) that it will be a long time before there is a big advantage to getting a phone just for LTE. Buy any of the smartphones this year, you will not regret it.

I see a droid x with lte launching summer next year just to get sales then something from samsung fall winter time get the phone now the first lte phones will be the tip of the iceberg
