To Whom it May Concern (Radio Performance)

Just thought I'd throw this out there in case anyone might benefit.

I've been with the ThunderBolt since it was release on March 17th. There have been many issues with the radios and LTE service since then. Hey, it is a bleeding edge network technology. Anyway...

I find my radio performance now, post Gingerbread OTA, better than ever. But the last step in improvement came just a week ago. So, I thought I'd pass it on. You can check if it applies to you.

In the early days, when the new eHRPD technology was having issues, many of us were instructed to change from the default EVDO eHRPD setting to EVDO Rev A (more about how to do that below). The point I wanted to make is that eHRPD was designed for faster 3G/4G radio switching negotiations than the older Rev A technology. But, since VZW had issues with it early on, many of us set our phones to Rev A AND FORGOT ABOUT IT! I was one who forgot about it. Well, thanks to a post here on AC last week, and further research into the older threads, I remembered that EVDO Rev A is NOT the default, but instead EVDO eHRPD is. And should mean faster switching if it is working right. IOW, less time with no-data between changes. So, I set my phone back to eHRPD and now I find my radio performance is better than ever. Fast switching. I still get connected to 3G Rev A when appropriate, also to 3G eHRPD when appropriate, and of course, 4G/LTE. Note: You can check using Menu | Settings | About | Network | Mobile network type. The periods between changes is much less using the eHRPD setting. It seems now that I'm virtually never without a data connection. After a week of testing, definitely better for me, in my area, than the older Rev A setting.

So... you might want to see if you're in this same boat. If you find your phone set to Rev A, change it to eHRPD and see if that helps. If not, change it back.

How to change has been recently published [HERE]. by RescueEMT911.

In the linked instructions, they state to configure Rev A to "Enabled", but I assume you are actually suggesting to set it to "eHRPD" (which *should* be the default), correct?

That is what mine is set to, which makes sense, because I've never changed mine. I was curious enough though to go in and look at the settings.

I remember a while back when that happened, and at that time I was connected via wifi, so I didn't bother to mess with it.

Thanks for the post!

Wow...I didn't even know about this. I'm on HRPD as I've never changed it but I have data drop issues. Although Rev A is not the default, I"m going to try that just to see if that helps with the issues I'm having.

yeah, eHRPD was the default from the factory. During the nationwide LTE outages, we also lost 3G and were restricted to 1X while 3G only devices were unaffected. Changing the modem setting to Rev-A allowed Thunderbolt users to regain 3G while the issues were being fixed. Aside from slightly faster 3G speeds when using eHRPD, I never really noticed much of a difference in data stability or hand-offs.

Mine was also on A. Changed back and appears to have locked better. We shall see.

Somehow I recalled this as well but assumed it was 'fixed' or a non issue once we started flashing new roms.

That's very possible, but I'm also pretty sure FrankXS, the OP, is not rooted, and therefore never installed any "new ROMs"

Correct. But, whatever works best for you.

I don't see either of those under mobile network type...mine says LTE. Is that good or bad? thanks..Vickie

Since 605.3 and now with the stock 605.5 GB OTA, I'm having much worse data connectivity issues. I've been on eHRPD the whole time. I used to only have 4G data problems but now they are mostly 3G data problems. Now, when I lose a data connection, I can usually restore it by turning off and one Mobile Network and don't need to reboot as often. It seems like some of the tweaks they've been making to the official ROMs/radio may sometimes enhance 4G at the expense of 3G and vice versa, depending on location. This was being reported early on with the leaked ROMs/radios. It doesn't seem like there is one fix that works everywhere for everyone.

Thanks, Robrecht

No, you won't see any choices there. What you are looking at is the current status at Menu | Settings | About Phone | Network | Mobile Network type. Just current status. What I was referring to in my earlier post was a way to adjust the phone's configuration in how it chooses which network type to use. After your (re)configuration, you can check your current network type using the menus above.

Hmmm... I'm on Rev A and never even touched that setting since I had the phone. This is a refurb that I got about a month ago though... so maybe they're sending out the phones set to Rev A now as a fix.

It would be interesting to know, one way or the other, what the factory recommended default is. Not a recommended setting to "fix" one user's issue, but the factory recommended and pre-configured default.

Another possibility I suppose is that checking that setting was not on the manufacturer's checklist of things to verify before sending off a refurb (probably not). I have noticed, I think, that the setting has survived the MR1, MR2 and GB OTA updates.

I'm happy you folks have improved performance. I don't. Often 30 minutes or more with no data until I notice and switch modes manually or shut off radio and turn on again. Network then connects. I don't get why software can't do what I can manually?
