I am considering getting another, smaller phone (maybe a blackberry????) to use when the Note is too big.

So, with Verizon, what do I need to do to toggle from one phone to the next and then back again. In other words, I'll want to disconnect one phone from my service, and then activate the other phone, right?

Is there any special tips on doing this with the least amount of hassles?

Go to my Verizon web site and log in. Go to devices and there's an option to switch them yourself. You'll need the IMEI of the new device, usually found under the battery. You can also find this by going into the dialer and typing *#06# and it will be displayed. I've done it a few times when I was on Verizon. It's super painless and fast.

Thanks.... once I get that second phone, I'll give both techniques a shot.

I've never touched a SIM card... they look a bit like memory cards, right?... but even though it is hard to believe that a blackberry sim works in a NOTE phone, I'll give it a go!

They are similar in look to an SD card. All that matters is the size of the sim. They're not proprietary, so they work for any phone which has the correct size slot.

I have my Note2 and my old Razr Maxx that I switch the sim between all the time. I even use the Razr without the sim as a dash cam. It works fine on Wifi without the sim. When I go kayaking I use the Razr because it fits in my waterproof case. Once I put the sim in I can make calls and txt messages without any problems.
