too many blank idle screens

how do i remove the blank idle (home) screens that keep appearing? it's up to 3 blank ones now in addition to the 2 i have my apps and widgets on

On any home screen, put two fingers on the screen at a distance then slide them together. After, you'll see all your home screens. Push and hold any home screen you want to remove, and drag it up to the "remove" area.

nothing happens when i slide my fingers together and if i just push and hold the wallpaper menu pops up
