Too many message apps

Got my wife an S9 Note and after transferring her note 8 data to it, she ended up with several different message apps, some of them duplicate apps but most from different sources. One of the apps, the only one we can use won't let her switch to the Verizon message+ app. I don't have a clue as to what is happening here. I tried backing up all her data and doing a factory reset but that didn't do anything. I can't delete any of the apps for the permissions list of installed apps.
I am ready to throw this phone is the trash and go back to a previous version of the note like note 5 which never gave her any trouble with messaging. ARRRRGH!!

are you not able to change the default in the settings - apps - top right three dots.

Simply trying to open Messages+ should prompt it to ask if you want to set it as the default SMS/texting app.

Did she maybe had tried different message apps and didn't delete them and transferred over?
Any case if can't get this sorted I can help you flash the stock firmware and use smart switch to restore but can choose what gets restored
