Touch Screen problems

I just downloaded the new froyo update which was prompted to me through my sprint epic 4g. When it was finished downloading/installing/rebooting the touch screen would not work. I opened my phone ap (using the keyboard slider)and typed in *#0*# or something like that to test the screen. When I tested the touch screen there was obvious lag. I thought it might be current running apps slowing my down the operating system so I deleted stage 1&2 ram. That helped but did not solve the problem. It's been a few hours since my update and the screen seems to work sometimes and sometimes not. Anyone have any ideas why???

For instance, when I turn on the phone I'm prompted with the 3x3 dot grid to unlock my phone. It takes about 20 seconds of me tapping the screen for just one to dot to light up green(letting you know that the phone has registered your touch). Then I have to connect to the next three dots to unlock. I'm sure you can see my frustration!!!

I just updated OTA on a stock phone and having exactly the same issues. Pretty much unusable! It takes about 15 seconds just to drag that little arrow up high enough just to unlock the phone!!! and scrolling through apps....forget about it!! Really sucks!

Hey otis, does your phone respond better if it's not connected to the computer? I saw that on another thread and it works for me.

bbeck, I don't have it plugged into a computer. I did try to plug it into the charger, but that really doesn't do anything. I was wondering if the new froyo is overloading my OS or something?!

My phone seemed to have settled down. It's back to normal. Not sure what happens right after the update but I was pretty concerned there for a while. Hopefully yours will settle in to it's new Froyo ROM too!! Good luck.

UPDATE: My phone is STILL having the touch screen problems!! I guess I spoke too soon about it being back to normal. It's intermittent but such a pain in the arse!!!

But I guess it's just the two of us cuz I havent seen anybody else even mention this problem. I even did a factory reset but no change.

I am having the same issue on my Samsung Epic. It started after I updated a couple of days ago, and at first I thought it was something I'd downloaded hogging resources, so I went through and uninstalled everything new that I'd acquired recently and it's still a problem. It takes forever for the phone to register that I'm touching the screen, but it comes and goes. It's sooo frustrating. Sometimes it gets so bad that I just turn the phone off (good luck trying to press "yes" when prompted to approve powering off) and back on and it seems to be a bit better after that, but still not good. I can only think that it's the update. So does anyone know what's going on? How do we fix it? Do we need to downgrade? Has Android recognized the problem?

It seems to be exclusively an issue with the touch screen too, because when I'm typing with the QWERTY keyboard, it doesn't lag at all, nothing wrong with it whatsoever.

oh good, a third person having this issue with this Epic upgrade. I'm having exactly the same problem as you're describing. here's what I wrote in another thread just to let you know what I've tried. And yes, I do believe the only answer is to downgrade back to Eclair. That's the only version that works on my phone. Here's my other post:

Ok, here goes... i think I am the only Epic owner who's having such a difficult time with Froyo. Eclair..no problem but when I upgrade (whether it be the official Sprint OTA or if I flash Bonzai, ACE, sydicateROM, etc.) the screen response is totally erratic!! It mostly doesn't recognize when I touch the screen, it has random screen touches all over the screen w/out me touching it. I wipe data, cashe and delvik (or whatever its called) and I also dial the ##786# and reset it. I've flashed off my SD and also loaded with Odin3+v1.61. No luck so far. Sometimes its smooth but mostly not. so back to Eclair DI18. any ideas? I'll probably go to Sprint and tell them my screen is messed up.

I went from Eclair 2.1, to Froyo EB13 2.2.1 via OTW, to Froyo EC05 via OTA today. I have zero problems so far.

Makes me think you have a conflict going on. I would suggest booting into recovery mode and do two factory resets before heading to Sprint. Sprint will do a factory reset anyway......

Okay, this may be really strange, may just be a coincidence and once I let the phone sit untouched for a few hours the problem will be back... but I went through to see if there happened to be any more updates since the last one, I thought maybe there was a bugfix.

(Keep in mind I am not very phone-savvy. Up until my mom bought me this phone last fall, I'd been using the same old Katana II from Sprint for a LONG time. I'm more of a computer person.) I went to: Menu > Settings > About Phone > System Update > Update PRL

I have no idea what PRL is or why it would have anything to do with this, but I checked everything listed under "System update" and this was the only one that had an update. I then had to reboot the phone and now I haven't had a single issue with it since. But like I said, it could just be laying dormant... who knows what's going on. It was just a couple of hours ago that I did that, so we'll see, I guess.

i had the same problem prior to the update, but since the update i have yet to have a problem with it, i do have a problem on occasion when i bump my sleep button and hit it again to turn it back on the screen just flashes and i have to push the sleep button again to turn it back on. but since the update i have yet to see a touch screen problem.

So, I ended up taking my phone to sprint to have them look at it. The technician seemed to think, that in my case, the ribbon connecting the screen to the chip had gone bad. They replaced my phone for free. I've got insurance but I didn't have to pay a deductible, so I don't think I even used it.

One other note I thought I'd mention. Apparently the advanced task killer app is giving alot of phones problems. I uninstalled it at the store but by then whatever broke my phone had done it's job and sprint was ordering a new one for me. Not sure if the app had anything to do with my screen going out, but the fact that it gives devices trouble is enough for me to uninstall. The new Froyo update allows you end programs without using advanced task killer...

Good luck! I don't see that being my problem because my screen is fine on Eclair DI18 [which I'm back on now :( ] ...but it doesn't work on EC05. My problem is obviously a software issue. some conflict that apparently only I've been able to create!! sucks... Eclair FTW!! ;0)

Otis - I've heard from multiple places it is not a good idea to run advance task killer on Froyo.
Beck - Did you upgrade OTA? There is a Odin flashable version of EC05 out there that is already rooted. It is really easy to do and really easy to go back if you have a problem. I'm not saying it will definitely work, but it you want Froyo then it is probably worth a try.

Ya, I feel like I've done everything possible to this phone. (see my earlier post on this tread, page 1). I saw another thread that says to make sure I have the right modem. How can I see which one I have? AFter all the flashing of .pit, .tar and .zip files off the SD card and through Odin, I forget what is what!!! So, is it important which modem I have?

The issue came back after my "update PRL" thing... so I took the back off of it, took out the battery, removed the SD card, and then put them back in and not a single problem since, and I did leave it on over night -- usually it would be at its worst when I woke up in the morning. It seems to be back to normal, and I don't think I'm speaking too soon because it's been over 12 hours.
