Towel root???

Am looking into rooting my xperia z1 compact and was looking at using the towel root method. Can I still flash custom Roms, recoveries etc, using the towel root method??

It would be better to unlock the bootloader, flash a recovery, root, and then flash a ROM rather than using Towel root.
