Transferring contacts

Hey guys. So my dad recently got an iPhone 4S through his job. His old phone was an HTC Vivid on AT&T and the 4S is on Verizon. Any idea how to transfer contacts? There's way too many to transfer manually.

Use google contacts to sync them across devices? I have never actually done it, but I believe it should work.

Thought that was only for Android devices? I'll see, I told him to get an HTC One or S4...

If he puts iOS 7 on the 4s, then his Google contacts will easily sync.

Came pre-installed on the 4S. Not at all familiar with iOS. How do you use Google contacts on the iPhone?
