trash folder in mail app - counter not resetting

Can anyone help me figure out why in my mail application - when I go into the trash folder and delete the emails - the counter on the folder page still says 39 - it adds to that number when I do delete mail and it goes into that folder - but when I go in and delete mail in the trash folder it only resets back to 39 again ... (folder is empty when i open it) - was at 37 for a while - but now has climbed to 39.
???
any help on resetting this would be greatly appreciated!
