I know I can thether wifi for free with a rooted phone, but can I do any international calling or data using internationally from a rooted phone without incurring additional charges? I plan on using Tango from the wifi in my hotel room to call back home.

Why would you incur charges for data when you use WiFi? If you don't want to use cellular data when roaming, un-check that option in the settings (or disable cellular data altogether when crossing the border). WiFi data and normal phone functions will still work fine.

I don't think the fact that your phone is rooted has any importance (unless you installed some devious malware that both requires root and roams on foreign data neworks).

I know I won't get charged on wifi... I'm talking about data. Are there any data advantages to being rooted?

When I travel to Canada I purchase roaming data at a discounted rate from Verizon in case I need something when not on Wifi. I can't remember what the cost was but it wasn't to bad and then instead of texting I just email everyone.

I may be wrong, but I get the impression that you think that rooting could allow you to use data without being charged for it. If that's your idea, then most certainly you cannot. Rooting gives you control over your device only, but not over the host network. Communication with the service provider is done via the SIM anyway, so what software the rest of your phone is running is largely irrelelvant.

can someone tell me how to wifi tether? meaning I don't want to use my 3G or 4G data... I would like to have my cell phone connected to my local wireless and be able access that network through my laptop.

Thank you

Sorry to bump an old thread but I'm making a trip to Canada and want to sign up for the 100mb Global plan for $25.00. When I add the service through Verizon online, it says that I must remove "4G No-Roam - USA only". Does that mean that my 4G will be temporarily disabled once I sign up for the global data plan (even when I'm still in the US leading up to my trip)?

And is "Data Roaming" (under Mobile network settings) the only thing that needs to enabled on the phone?
