Tried to use Android Pay at McDonald's

So out of the 2 times I've tried to use Android Pay, I was only unsuccessful once. I was in the drive-thru at McDonald's and saw the Android Pay sign and tried to use it. So I get to the window and to my surprise and confusion, the girl pulls out a scanner gun and tries to scan my phone. I assumed I would have to tap my phone on something like I've done before. Of course, the scanner didn't work so I just pulled out my card.

Has anyone ever had their phone scanned with one of those guns and have it work with this app? If so, what can I try differently next time?

The person at the drive-thru was incorrect. There is nothing to scan with a handheld barcode scanner.

(this is why I don't use it in the drive-thru)

You would have had to hand her the phone so she could tap it on payment kiosk, then she'd hand it back to you for the fingerprint or PIN, then you'd hand it back to her to tap again.

Thanks! That makes sense. Guess I won't try to use it in the drive-thru again!

The McDonald's I used it at had a payment terminal that they held out of the drive thru window to tap. The scanner is for mobile offer qr codes in the McDonald's app. Both times I tried to use it, they brought out the scanner first. One time, once I explained it to them, they got the terminal to tap. The other time, I gave up and used a card.

You are incorrect...if you have a McDonalds gift card loaded into Android Pay, like I do, that's the only way to pay using a gift card.
