Trouble flashing into recovery after rooting

I'm an android noob, but even I thought I knew how to flash into recovery.

I am sitting here trying to flash toasts rom but every time I try to get to recovery (volume down/power) it just starts the phone normally. Am I doing something incorrect here or what?

lol, ha, i have the same prob with rom manager though, everytime it say restart in recovery( i have the latest clockwrk mod, and tried alternative ones) i just takes me to the stock recovery with the phone and the exclamation point. which then i have to hook it uip to my comp and load it through windows.bat
