Trying to decide

I am thinking of taking the leap into the tablet world, but would like some feedback. I'm basically trying to decide if I should do a Nook Color and Root it or buy an actual tablet such as the Galaxy, etc.

What I really want is just something to sort of be able to sit on the couch, surf the web, maybe read stuff on, let the kids (6y/o & 2y/o) maybe play games or watch videos on when on road trips and such. A big must for me is to be able to also remote into my work PC, if I'm away from the office on a road trip, or something similar. I generally use Remote Desktop or LogMeIn for this. It might also be cool to be able to setup a softphone or something which would tie into my work Asterisk Phone System to be able to make/receive calls if out of the office.

I have wifi in my house and can broadcast a wifi from my cell, so I don't want to pay for monthly service, I do know that much. My cousin rooted his Nook and said it's great, but I didn't get a chance to play with it. My sister-in-law also has one, which isn't rooted and I thought from the few minutes I had with it, that it was pretty nice. I really like the size!!

So, for an entry level person, would the Nook Color suffice for 1/2 the cost or is it worth it to get a full fledge tablet? Pros and Cons???

Thanks

Since you mentioned the Nook Color, it sounds like you prefer the 7" form factor. If that's the case, the Acer Iconia A100 should be hitting the streets any day now. It should be available as low as $299 and will have much more functionality than a Nook Color. If you can wait a month or two, the 7" Amazon tablet should be out soonish. Beyond that, there's the HTC Flyer at the high end of the spectrum, and a bunch of not-so-nice devices at the low end.
