Hello all. I've had my thunderbolt for a little over a year now and decided to root since the 1 year warranty is up. But I have some questions.

1) If rooting allows you to get rid of bloat ware. Does it speed up the phone getting rid of lag and provide for better reception? Does everything stay the same on the phone except to be able to get rid of the bloat ware?

2) Do Rom's work with any rooted android? Or are they more specific?

3) If they are more specific, I have a verizon thunderbolt with there latest software update. This is what my phone tells me.

Under phone sorfware status it says. Thunderbolt 2.11.605.19
Under about phone it says. Android version 2.3.4 , Htc sense version 2.1 , software number 2.11.605.19 710ord

4) With that info, which I hope is enough. What roms should I be using? And is there a sticky or post with a list of roms for the thunderbolt?

5) Does someone have a compiled list of thunderbolt Rom's? If so can they post it and then have it stickyed under the root and rom processes? Also would like to see what they look like if that's possible.

Any suggestions on roms would be greatly appreciated.

What I'm trying to get out of the root is to get rid of bloat ware, simplicity without being boring, better reception and battery life and just better over all performance. Lets just say I want something to match my personality.

And I've been up for the last 20 hours plus reading the boards and tried all the tips and tricks I could find. Which lead me to wanting to root my phone. Now I'm brand spanking new to all this and find some of the stuff confusing but not all. Those who have put in the time and energy for the simple one step root I applaud you, BRAVO! And many thanks. And I'm not worried about rooting anymore. What I am concerned about is Rom's. Any info or input is greatly appreciated. Please also understand I really don't understand a lot of the tech terms and would appreciate things put in simple laymens terms if possible. Lol sorry :)

Thank you in advance

Reception probably won't improve. It is based on cell towers and vzw service. You can try an older radio if you used to have better reception before latest update.

Does everything stay the same on the phone except to be able to get rid of the bloat ware?

It depends which rom you choose. There are roms available that are just plain debloated stock but others that are even faster and smoother imo.

2) Do Rom's work with any rooted android? Or are they more specific?

Roms are specific. Only roms written for tbolt will work.

3) If they are more specific, I have a verizon thunderbolt with there latest software update. This is what my phone tells me.

Before installing the new rom you will erase that old rom. The radios won't change and there is no need to change them as long as you stick to gingerbread roms.

4) With that info, which I hope is enough. What roms should I be using? And is there a sticky or post with a list of roms for the thunderbolt? http://forums.androidcentral.com/showthread.php?t=179367

Yes, there is a sticky thread in this forum that explains everything. I recommend you read it slowly and carefully and even read a lot of the q and a to avoid problems other users had.

5) Does someone have a compiled list of thunderbolt Rom's? If so can they post it and then have it stickyed under the root and rom processes? Also would like to see what they look like if that's possible.

I think rootzwiki has the most. I like Thundershed 1.4 but it is an aosp rom and does not resemble stock rom. If you like stock rom there are many to choose from.

This rom is similar to stock but debloated. http://rootzwiki.com/index.php?/topic/5679-[Rom][GB][2.11.605.19]Killasense-3.7.19-Stock-Sense-2.1-[Updated-4/23]

Remember, if you root YOU have to do all updates and fixes yourself. If you like spending time playing with the phone and learning about rooting it is fantastic. If you just want your phone to "work" without a lot of tinkering don't do it!

Yes I had better reception before last update. So I would need to root to get an older radio? I even went to my store they changed the the SIm card and it helped a little for a bit but im back to poor 4g and I'm in a 4g area. How is a radio installed?

So when I root I need to have a rom ready to use? Or does root only give super access to get rid of crap ware? Does the rom the phone is currently on stay on the phone?

What I was asking in number 4 is there a post with lists of roms to choose from.

:)

Please see the links I gave you (stickies) in this forum.
Rooting will not change the rom nor the radios but you must root in order to do those changes. Changing radios is the trickiest and most dangerous operation (meaning you could fatally screw up your phone if you dont follow directions precisely).

Everything you need to know about rooting, changing radios, and changing roms is in the sticky I linked to.

Save changing radios to the very last since you really want to be comfortable and know what youre doing before you try it.

is it possible to get a good AOSP ROM without having to change the stock radio? i'm contemplating rooting myself, especially now with that new root method that just came out

Rooting doesn't get rid of anything, it only opens/unlocks the ability to modify the SYSTEM files and such. If you ROOT and install a ROM, every ROM that I have flashed too has the non-essential software gone...i.e. BLOATWARE.

2) Do Rom's work with any rooted android? Or are they more specific?
There are ROMS specific to the Thunderbolt and others for the Android phones.

3) If they are more specific, I have a verizon thunderbolt with there latest software update. This is what my phone tells me.

Yes, you have the latest version of the FIRMWARE ".19"

Go to the top of the forum and look for "Thunderbolt ROMS.........",

If you want your phone to have the user experience of a stock phone, then you want a SENSE ROM.....there are a few ones out there that are base off different versions of SENSE....2.0, 2.1, 3.0, 3.5.

If you want a plain vanilla OS, then you want a ASOP type ROM....those would be CM7, Thundershed, Thunderstick, SKF, those use Launcher Pro or Go Launcher as their MENU/Home screen program. Those ROMS tend to be a little faster because of all the SENSE stuff is gone.

Find a few ROMS in each catagory type and go to YouTube and look. There are many videos that show what each one does.

5) Does someone have a compiled list of thunderbolt Rom's? If so can they post it and then have it stickyed under the root and rom processes? Also would like to see what they look like if that's possible.

There are lists floating around, but, to be honest, the list is old and out of date most of the time. But, it is good to look on the list to see what ROMS and names of the ROMS are out there. ROM LIST

What I'm trying to get out of the root is to get rid of bloat ware, simplicity without being boring, better reception and battery life and just better over all performance. Lets just say I want something to match my personality.

I almost gurantee that all custom ROMS are DE-BLOATED so if you flash to any of those, you half won have the battle.

Use THIS tool. I have used it a few times on my replacement phones and it is Soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo easy to root your phone. Just read everything as it pops up.

We are here to help you...just ask questions. If you private any of us, we can help you out. Most of us have done this many many many...to many times to mention. I flash at least 2 to 3 times a month....just because.....and I gurantee you will also.....don't believe me....report back to us in a month.....LOLOLOL

You can download and flash any number of radios...Mr2, Mr3, Mr4. Most of the time, the ROM's have the lastet radio's. They should be listed in the revision in the particular thread of the ROM you are downloading.

If there's a list of ROM's here at AC, I haven't seen it, but you can find plenty of ROM's at Rootzwiki, XDA, Thunderbolt Forums, and Igottadroid. However, here are a few to get you started once you join the rooted:

Team BAMF Roms: BAMF Forever 1.11, BAMF Forever Cubed 1.10, BAMF SoaB 1.04, BAMF Remix 1.0.4., Sky Raider Zeus 1.3

ThunderStick ROM's: ThunderStick FullBlown 1.1.1, ThunderStick BareBack 3.0.3

Infected ROM Eternity

Accense ROM v1.2

Liquid ROM's (there's a bunch of them.)

Non Sense ROM's
ThunderShed v1.6 (or whichever version of it you like best. It's very fast.)

Bully Desensed v1.6 (I'm going to try this one out this weekend when I have time to set up my phone)

CM7

iKReaM 3.0 EL NiNO (this is the one I'm rocking right now.)

Hey thank you all for your responses i really appreciate it. But i want to especially thank the you tube thought. That never even crossed my mind to do. It has made my decision much easier since I'm a better visual learner that was great. thanks a ton :) :) :)

Keep this in mind when rooting:

Once you root, you are responsible for handling updates on your phone. Do NOT run any OTA updates on your phone once you root. There are tools available here to make sure your phone doesn't even ask you...or you can install a custom ROM which prevent this as well. Trying to run an OTA can turn your rooted phone into a big mess....boot-loops, soft-bricks, etc.

But, you may ask, what if I *want* the lastest update?!?!? Are you telling me I can't have it?!?!?

The mentality of always installing the latest official software update can be a hard habit to break, but honestly, with a rooted phone you're already a step ahead of the game. Usually, the update has already been leaked and built into ROMs before non-rooted folks ever see it...and even if not, just give it time, and most likely there will be some devs that provide a rooted version of the update for you.

What if I just un-root to install the update, and then root my phone again???

Waste of time. Seriously, unless you need to send your phone back to Verizon or you're trying to recover from a serious error, I say hold on to root as long as you can! As I said above, if you're rooted, you can probably already find a version of the update to install...and if you unroot to install an official update, there's always a chance you won't be able to root again because the exploits used to gain root previously have been patched.

Ok how do I turn off auto update haven't chose a rom yet. Also after I rotted some apps had updates how do I update them?

Auto update for the OS or for Apps?

If it's the OS, there are threads on this subforum that address that, but again, if you do install a custom ROM that you don't have to worry about that.
EDIT: Looks like trter10-2's tool can take care of that for you...
http://forums.androidcentral.com/th...acks/179367-all-one-htc-thunderbolt-tool.html

If you're talking about apps, then you can update them via the Play Store as you normally would...this is also where you can turn off the automatic update settings, to answer the 2nd part of your question.

1) Bloatware. It typically is harmless. Like anything else in memory, it can go nuts and use battery power. To me the worse part is that the garbage programs always needed to have updates. Annoying, but mostly harmless.
If you root your phone, you can then do better backups. Plus you can use a program like Titanium Backup to freeze the bloatware. When you do that, you really haven't changed a thing on the phone. You have just hidden that junk. If unsure about changing roms, you can do this.
2) You need a Thunderbolt specific rom. In the end, I have actually wasted a LOT of time playing with roms. But, it is what I wanted to do. Don't expect to install a rom and be forever happy. It will consume many hours. Installing a new rom means a hared reset and rebuilding your phone from scratch.
3) I currently have the Infected rom. It has Sense 3.5 which I sort of like. based on 2.11.605.19. All is well now, but I've had a couple of issues with other roms that almost had me going back to stock.
4) Root the stock rom and freeze the bloat. If you have time and want to experiment, try BAMF 1.11 or Infected (or on of the others). I found the BAMF rom have an annoying lag so switched. You will get a lot of opinions. You will find all roms have a glitch or two.
5) The rom lists, and roms, aren't updated like they were a year ago. All of the caffeine fueled geeks are moving on to new devices.

IMHO, just root your device initially, then play around with freezing the bloatware. Later, if you get the urge, then try a few different roms. Keep a nandroid backup of what you started with so you can go back.

I'm still looking at roms trying to decide if I want one lol. There are 2 though that have peeked my interest.

The infected one or the bamf remix one. Though leaning more to the remix. My only concern is the remix isn't the one listed a few posts up it says remix 1.8 update and don't know if I have to do the orig one first and then add the update or if the update alone.
