Turn off voice mail ringing

I searched the forum without an answer. When my vm ring tone starts, often I just wanted to turn it off, how can I do that? I've tried to go into the vm and listen to the message, but the ring tone plays on. I don't need to know for 15 or 30 seconds that I have a VM. Is this just due to the fact that I've picked a ring tone that is really long playing for my VM ring tone? DUH!
