Turn vibrate on/off without waking up device?

I would like to be able to turn vibrate mode on/off using the volume rocker button, i.e., a long press on "volume down" would turn on vibrate mode and a long press on "volume up" would turn it off.

I have not been able to find an app that lets me do this. The most convenient I've found is a lock-screen widget that turns vibrate on/off. But that still requires me to wake up the device, swipe, and then tap. Not only does this take longer but I have to be looking at my phone, so I can't do it casually with the phone still in my pocket.

Does anybody know of an app that would let me do this?

I wish the Nexus 4 had a hardware switch that did this. Turning vibrate on/off is inconvenient enough that I often forget to do it and my phone will ring when e.g. I'm in a restaurant (impolite) or it'll vibrate while I'm alone at home (= missed call).

I know what you mean about having the phone ring at an inconvenient time. Aside from waking up the device, no, I'm not sure there is an app that will let you do this. The device locks and you don't have access to unless you wake it up. I could be wrong though.

I set up Tasker to turn on the silent mode when I place it face down on the table. If that is what you want, and since Tasker can do it, I am sure there is an app that can do the same thing.

You still have to remember to place it face down for it to work, however.

You don't need a widget, just long-press the power button on the lock screen. I don't know of any way to do it without having the screen on, though.

I solved a similar problem this way:

Installed NFC Task Launcher ( https://forums.androidcentral.com/e...jwsoft.nfcactionlauncher&hl=en&token=vBb3aHoA ) and configured two tasks.

Task 1 "At Home" is triggered whenever my N4 connects to my home Wi-Fi (essentially, when I approach my front door). It sets my ringtone to Pyxis and all volumes to high.

Task 2 "At Office" triggers when I arrive at my office and automatically connect to the office Wi-Fi. It sets my ringtone to the more subtle Hangout and volumes to medium-low.

For $3.99, I can upgrade to the Pro version of NFC Task Launcher which adds the ability to trigger tasks according to time of day and/or day of week, and also based on "geofence" mode which would trigger the task based on, let's say, being within some radius of my home.

And, of course as its name implies, NFC Task Launcher also allows you to trigger tasks by tapping your phone to a previously programmed NFC tag or sticker. Place one in a convenient location within your office and one at home, or even two of them in your car - one to tap when arriving at the office and another to tap when leaving for home.

The only caveat: I honestly do not know if the phone needs to be "on" for NFC tags to read. I have some on order and have not had the opportunity to try them yet.

Thanks for the info guys. Tasker looks very interesting. Basically the only time I want the ringer on is at home so this sounds pretty ideal. Otherwise I'm out and I probably wouldn't hear the ringer or it would be impolite to have it go off.

Too bad. However, based on my testing, the screen does not need to be on for the other method I outlined above to work. Whether the screen is on or off, when I enter my home the phone connects to my home Wi-Fi and the task (set ringtone, volumes, and a few others) runs. Same thing when I enter my office and connect to the office Wi-Fi.

Well, sure, but both NFC Task Launcher and Tasker have way more capability - don't you agree?

Sure, but for what the op is wanting to accomplish, he just needs certain profiles in certain locations. He doesn't really need all that additional capability.

I used Tasker App Factory, which is an extension of Tasker, to create an app that accomplishes one thing, to set the silent mode to ON when the phone is placed face down.

I tested it on my and my wife's phones. If anyone wants to try it, I can send you the apk file. You have to sideload it of course. Tasker does the permissions on its own. I only add the trigger (orientation face down) and the action (silent mode on).
