Turned up all volume types but no sound

Just bought this phone today. I was testing ringtones and for a brief moment I was able to hear one, but then the sound cut out. Now, every time I try to I hear nothing when I try out the ring tones. I had my husband phone me but no sound.
I've done all system updates and tried turning it on and off. Did I get a dud?

UPDATE: Turns out changing the Priority Interruptions Settings did the trick. Events & Reminders was switched on and Calls was switched off. After switches Calls to On I now can hear my ringtones. I knew it had to be something stupid like that.
