TW/Launcher Pro Questions

Hello all. I am new to Android (and the Epic) having recently come over from the Pre. I miss the ease of use of the Pre but really like the Epic, more so every day.

I recently downloaded Launcher Pro, which I like quite a bit, and have it set as my default browser.

Questions: I did not delete my TW launcher of apps/widgets and think I may be running all of them "twice." How do I get back to TW (and then back again to LP) to wipe it clean?

Also, I have 66% internal memory free, 98% SD card free, but only 16% RAM free. Is this normal? If not, is it "bad?" And last, if it is bad, how do I "fix" it?

Thanks in advance, I am sure I will have a million more questions for you. Consider me "tech-curious" while still being a "knowledge virgin."

I know there's another way around it that I've read, but can't remember, but to check what Touchwiz is still running you can use the app "Home switcher" (which I guess gets broken in Froyo) to bounce between launchers.

As for the memory usage, it doesn't seem too bad. What I've read about Android is that using all your RAM is not a bad thing as the phone will close apps as it needs to to free up RAM. It's not like a pc where once you use about 60-70% of your RAM your computer slows to a crawl. (Though, if I'm wrong about this, someone please correct me. I'm still relatively noobish myself)

I would download Home Switcher if you are not going back to TW and close those widgets.

+1 for Home Switcher... allows you to move back and forth between launchers at will with ease...

you can freely switch launchers with Androids built in application manager
On your capacitive buttons select menu..

Then Applications
then menu on your capacitive buttons again.. Filter "ALL"

Select whichever Launcher your currently running. (Touchwiz I think show up as TW launcher) within the application info of your current running launcher..there is an area Launch by default. select the Clear Defaults button. Then exit out of application manager. and hit your capacitive Home key. You will then get a pop up prompt asking ">complete actions using.".
TW launcher
Home is stock android
Launcher Pro

be sure to select the check mark use by default for this action. for whatever launcher you want to set as your default

You can freely switch between any launcher you have on your phone. Voila

I've gotten the impression that a lot of people like stock android. Is it really this easy or are there downsides to shutting down TW launcher and loading up the stock android in this manner on the Epic? If I try out the stock android then go back to the touch whiz is it going to screw with any of my other settings on the phone that might be a negative? I think there was a video of this here on Android Central when the Epic was first released.
Thanks :)

Stock android is so ugly. Touchwiz makes it a little better and I can't figure out why anyone would prefer the stock look.

People like vanilla android b/c that's what they started with. Its called aosp. Its something developers prefer to build there roms and stuff of. I think, the epic is my first android too.

But there is no need to wipe your touchwiz launcher stuff. They do not run on top of each other. When one launches its got its own setup - kind of like the sprint id sort of thing thhere coming with except sprint id is not a launcher its just a set of apps. Ex: you can overlay the sprint id of "sports" on top of your homescreen where you have your nfl apps and they won't run twice. If that makes sense, haha sorry I tred

I have a Samsung Exhibit. I have been having several problems with this phone since I got ithe phone like the TW Launcher. I have had it replaced and is being replaced again. I just started writing down the error messages. T-mobile has no clue what the TW Launcher is, but has had several complaints about it. I don't have an app called the Launcher. I don't understand why this is happening. I've also been getting: Sorry! The process android.process.acore has stopped working unexpectly. Please try again. Force close. T-mobile has no clue what these are, why my phone is freezing, turning black, blinking at me, not letting me make calls or sent texts, shutting down on it's own, won't let the bluetooth work, I can't hear people when they call or I call them. They can hear me, but I can't hear them. They told me to clear my phone logs and texts every week. The ones that do work, I delete daily. I had forty something MB left on the phone, but I got rid of a lot of apps, now there's 83MB left. T-mobile keeps telling me there is nothing wrong with my phone and basically I am lying. Why would lie?! I just want a phone that works. This is my first phone w/ them. If I am going to pay for a service, I would like their phones to work. But it sounds like it is happening with other models as well. I am very frustrated.:(

I looked under all my apps. It seems that Launcher is an app that came with the phone and can not be removed.

Also I was getting Sorry! The process android.process.acore has stopped working unexpectly. Please try again.
Force close. I was told the only way to fix these problems is to do a factory reset which I have been avoiding. So with getting another replacement it sounds like it will do the same thing as the previous two phones. Plus I see these messages go back to 2010. If anyone is still reading this, why the heck have they not fixed it if it's been happening since then? I also have heard that my phone has been discontinued since they brought out the Exhibit II.

Each phone is different. You might want to try to do a factory wipe and see if that helps your crashing issues. If it does, than install your programs back one at a time, and see if any of them are causing you problems. If it doesn't, than back to your carrier for a replacement, as it's likely a hardware problem.

For those directions, you would be best served asking your question in the Samsung Exhibit forum, not the Samsung Epic4g forum, as the steps can differ between our devices, and I'm sure you don't want us giving you steps that CAN'T be followed ;)

Thanks ratsttam,

I just did a search on TW Launcher and this forum came up. I did search within this website for the Exhibit I, but didn't find much other than when it was released. I didn't realize it was only a year old. I'm afraid I am going to have to do the factory reset since it's getting worse, but T-mobile sent me another replacement. I hope that one will work. I have had 2 of these phones already with the same problems. Thank you for replying even though I was in the wrong forum.

It doesn't appear that the Exhibit 4g (Samsung Hawk) has a forum here, which I find pretty odd. When you get the new one, Please don't just install all your apps at one time. Install one, run for a little bit, than move on to the next. Might also help to do a factory wipe right out of the box. Good luck with the replacement!

Hi ratsttam,

I did the master reset and wiped the cache clear on the replacement phone. I still had a question. How long in between the installation of the apps should I wait? a day or two or a week?

Thanks
Tiffany

Just long enough to be sure that the most recently installed app is OK. For instance, if you install a note taking app, take a couple notes, make sure nothing crashes, than install something else. Run that app a bit, go on to the next one. What you don't want to do is install 10 apps at once, than try to find out which is causing a problem.

As far as your SD card, I would back it up on a computer, put it in the phone, format it (in the phone), than bring your pictures, music, videos, back to it before going through the app install process. Some apps like to install to the SD card, and it would be a shame to see you run out of internal storage before you get everything up and running the way you would like :)

Thank you so much. So far the Cardio Trainer app is fine. Sorry for all the questions. I use to be good at electronics, but as you get older you lose it. I was so good at programming the VCR. :p Anyways, I had to put my contacts on my SD card since they didn't all take to the SIM card. Can I put that on my computer? And yes there are a few apps on my SD card, but not a lot since a lot of the apps I have didn't give you that option.

Thanks
Tiffany

Always make sure your contacts are linked to your gmail account. This way you're not messing with sim cards or losing them if something happens to your phone. You should be able to copy the contacts file to your computer, than import them into your gmail. Once you link your phone back to gmail, it'll pull all that info back in. If you lose your phone, or have to replace it (or just upgrade down the road), they're all there for you. Also makes adding a lot of names/numbers easier from a computer rather than the phone. When you're in your contacts list, you should see a "g" next to each name.
