Two freezes needing recovery menu reboot in one day

Greetings. I have a Samsung Note 8 that has performed well until yesterday. The last android update has been on there for a few weeks and I have not installed any recent apps. Although of course apps are updating all the time in the background.

The first time I had a blank screen and power button did not do anything and plugging into a charger did not do anything. Strangely I could swear my S2 watch said it was still connected? But anyway phone would not do anything.

I did the power button/volume down for 15 seconds and the recovery menu came up and I did a normal reboot and all seemed well.

Then later in the day it froze on the "always on display". I could see the always on display but again, no bottoms or fingerprint reader did anything. Ah oh......

Last night I used my cache cleaner and deleted some of the larger app cache's (google play had a big one) but wondered if anyone had any further suggestions. I have never done the recovery menu cache clean (That is a scary menu if you pick the wrong item! :) ) but don't know if that would make a difference of what the impact is if you do that.

I know support's default answer is "reset the phone to factory and re-store everything to see if it is a software issue". I get that but it is like saying "just re-install windows"! Both might work but it is a pain to reset everything up so wonder if there are any other suggestions.

Or.....is this a foregone conclusion that with the Note 8 doing this that I have a hardware issue. I know I can get a replacement, but of course it will be "like new" not "new"...
If the phone was a year or two old I would probably get a replacement to be safe. But given it is so new, I want to make sure it is hardware before I go that route.

FWIW today it is fine so far....

Thanks,

I'm not sure it's hardware. I've had the same issue (the phone stops responding and only a soft reset brings it back) since the S8. For me, I've consistently noticed that when I use Secure Folder a lot that day, that's when the freeze happens, and also seems to happen when it's charging most of the time. It's a nuisance since it's happened twice so far while my phone was charging at night, and obviously, alarm doesn't go off in the morning.

I do admit that after the update it hasn't happened (yet), but I still think it's somehow related to Secure Folder and/or charging.

Oh, and I tried the factory reset on the S8 and it didn't help. I haven't bothered with the N8.

I had this same issue (about a month ago?) with it freezing and rebooting, especially (but not always) while it was charging. I waited but then putting up with it was more irritating than just doing a factory reset. SO I suffered through that- freezing and rebooting has 100% gone away (for me) but now my AOL is broke- I'll deal with it until the Note 9 :p

Might be different things. Rebooting and freezing for me started after I synced my polar watch with the phone. I have since then synced it after the Fact. reset and no issues.

Thanks for all the scenarios. In my case both times it happened I was working and the phone was just sitting in my pocket or on my desk.

Only apps accessed earlier in day were mail, messages, web, and calendar. So nothing in common.

Only other issue I've had is the same as the other S7's of friends have. Randomly I get the message that Google play services is overloading the cpu". It uses more battery for a day or 2 then goes away. I know 5 or 6 S7, S8, and note 8's that do this.

So I guess no idea what causes this freeze but a....cough....hard reset fixed it for one member. I wish there was something common that seemed to cause it.

Sometimes crashes are caused by third-party apps that try to do system maintenance--package disablers, cache cleaners, etc. If you're using any such apps, I'd try uninstalling them and see if things improve. If not, I'd try one system reset and then exchange the phone if there's still a problem.

Just had mine lock up overnight for the first time.

Mine: A "first week" phone, actually the week prior to the actual launch by mail/pre-order via BB. Lots of apps. Nothing outside of the Google Play system. Always charge with cable, not conducting. AOD on.
Been running Android 8.0 with zero issues for over a month.

Got up this morning.... Locked up. (Power was at 20 percent when I went to bed, 100 percent after restart)

The only thing different than normal was that I had a pair of factory AKG headphones plugged in.

My wife's completely stock N8 has done it twice. Conductive, nothing else plugged in.

We both have SD cards.

Just so you know that either it's not software related (because I am running Oreo and she, Nougat) or it IS software related and they don't have that hiccup handled yet, pre-launch of Oreo.

Verizon, btw.

You can determine whether it is a third party app causing the problem rather than something to do with the phone itself, by starting it in safe mode.
Sort of. If the problem happens in Safe Mode too, then yes it has to be the phone's hardware or built-in software. But if it doesn't happen in Safe Mode (no matter how much time it's given), it could mean either a faulty app, or else a problem with the phone that only shows up when running certain perfectly well-written apps.

So it's worth trying, but it may not provide a definitive answer.
