Two threads for text messaging

My wife has a S7 and I have the S7 edge. When I text her, sometimes my text will go into a seperate text. It appears to be a group message with herself and myself in the thread. My phone just has one thread. Her phone has two threads. This happens randomly and mms is not involved.

Are you both using hangouts? The last update to hangouts removed the ability to merge SMS messages. I have 2 threads too with certain conversations
