1. The parameters of the plan are not identical when the device is purchased from the Project Fi Store vs. the Google Store. See https://support.google.com/fi/answer/6337239 for a comparison.
2. When I purchased my Nexus 6P, it was possible to add Device Protection after the fact - up to 30 days after purchase, if I recall correctly. This is no longer the case! I just finished a chat with Google support and he confirmed what this page https://support.google.com/store/answer/6283618 implies; you must order Device Protection at the time you purchase the device. Now that I already have my Pixel XL in hand (arrived yesterday), my only option for adding Device Protection is to return this phone and then place a new order. Of course, we know how long that would take given the current stock situation...
It's not a big deal for me as I am not a huge fan of protection plans, although given the high cost of the Pixel XL 128, I would have considered adding it if it were still possible to do so.
