I dug around the forums (and elsewhere) and I couldn't find anything concrete to answer my question. maybe I was just using the wrong keywords or phrasing it wrong. Anyway....

Really simple. If I'm at home, does my Gnex (on Rogers) automatically prefer wifi over my mobile data? As in, out in the parking lot it's pulling data from the towers. I sit down at my desk and it connects to the wifi. If I do NOT turn off mobile data, which will the phone pull from - mobile or wifi? Does it prefer wifi over 3G/4G if it's available?

And yes, I feel dumb for asking. I'm very new to Android. Haven't even had this phone for 24 hours (And turned off mobile data while at home just to be safe)

If you have wifi turned on it will try to connect to the nearest router. You do not have to turn off data. It should, if wifi is on, prefer wifi over 3G/4G.

I you have WIFI turned on and mobile data turned on... you're using a WIFI connection. Mobile data does not need to be turned off... as soon as WIFI is enabled... it automatically switches to a WIFI connection (provided that you have one available). Your status bar will show you what connection you have with using a WIFI, 3G or 4G icon.

Does it prefer WIFI over 3G/4G?
It depends on how good your connection is. If you have a strong WIFI signal versus a week 3G/4G signal.. than use WIFI. WIFI (depending on how strong the connection is) will also be better for battery life. For example... I have a weak 3G/4G signal at home.. so I turn on WIFI for a better connection and to help save battery life.

4G in general is a battery hog... so anytime you're around a strong WIFI signal (example Home)... than use it.

Thanks everyone. I had assumed it would prefer wifi over mobile data, but with a new phone, new OS, new apps to download and play with, figuring out which apps do what, etc.... I wanted to make sure I wasn't going to blow my 2gig data allowance in a few days :)
