Yes, that's right - Google has stated several times that there's no difference between the US and the EU version. The rumor about the EU's getting multi-touch was started when (apparently) some editor from Heise.de discovered that some of the devices shown at the CES had pinch-to-zoom enabled. Turned out that those devices didn't have the final version of the software on them.

ps:
It's not quite correct though, that the N1 doesn't have multi-touch. According to Google's Erick Tseng (from a statement made on the engadget show), the N1 does have multi-touch for the keyboard. It's just not implemented the same way as it is on the iPhone (in that you can hold two buttons at the same time to produce additional characters). The N1, however, (at least according to Tseng) does register two keystrokes at once, mainly to improve typing speeds. In the browser, there's no multi-touch, though. If you want multi-touch, you need to use a different browser (Dolphin browser springs to mind - it's quite an excellent product).

I've just read a news on a french website, talking about the version that will be released in France soon. For those who can read it, it's at
mobinaute.com/321188-nexus-one-google-multipoint-france.html
(sorry, but I cannot post links...really stupid thing...)

It basically tells two things:
1. the N1 will not have the pinch to zoom activated. Dolphn required.
2. Google navigation is seen as "another product", so it's not sure it will make it to France (even if this could change, now that Nokia announced they will make a free navigation app on their phone).

I don't know where they got these pieces of informations. They just tell "during a demo". I haven't read this elsewhere until now, but this site is I think a reliable one.

Personally I prefer the browser without multi touch. I like the way that when i view a page a quick double tap brings it in close to the correct screen size automatically. I have an iPhone so i'm used to multi touch. I hope they don't put it in future releases or if they do give us the option to turn it on/off.

don't forget, the Vodafone version has yet to ship... so right now, the UK users are indeed getting the US models...

People need to realize "Pinch to Zoom" is just an implementation of a form of multitouch, so yes the N1 does have multitouch, just not implemented as P to Z

Very true but that's how the majority of the general public perceives it. They've been used to apple.

So talking about hardware there will be no differens between the U.S. version and the European one? In that case, if I import the Nexus One now, won't I be able to just restore the software to the European? When there is one, that is...So that I get pinch and zoom?

And another thing, why does it say "Activate your phone" on google's nexus one website. If I import a unlocked version will I have to activate it and, i that case will I be able to do that without any hack or crack or something like that?

I believe that it when you get their subsidized plan with it. I'm not sure, but I just popped my sim from my iPhone 3Gs into the N1 and it worked.
