Unable to read USB stick on Galaxy Tab 10.1

I bought a USB cable for my Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 wi-fi (the original 10.1" tab) in the hope that I would be able to plug in a USB stick and cast films and internet TV to my Chromecast when we go on holiday but I'm getting the dreaded "High power USB device connected" error whenever I plug in a USB stick (I've tried three different ones, including what must surely be low powered cufflink USB sticks).

I've found two possible answers but no definitive answer. The first possible answer is that the tab needs a powered USB hub and the second possible answer is that Samsung took support for USB sticks out of the kernel. Does anyone actually know the answer (and solution)?
