Unable to "see" purchased widgets

This is my first android device and I am struggling.

I downloaded HD widgets in hopes of installing a transparent weather and clock.
I can customize the widget, it saves fine, and shows up in my active widgets, but does not appear on the home screen. That is, I do the long press, select widget, customize and save it. It says it's added successfully but its just not there. I downloaded Beautiful Widgets with the same result.
As I can add other widgets (stock that came with phone and from other apps such as Audible I'm fairly certain this is glaring user error. Are widgets some sort of magic I cannot ever do?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

You know what, just for giggles add the widget and when it says it's been added but you can't see it restart the phone.

Thank you for the quick advice. I have tried that repatedly, as well as uninstalling the widget apps, restarting and doing a fresh install numerous times. I found a bit of info about not running from the SD card, but both widget apps are installed to the phones's memory. I just know this is some silly thing I am missing

Going to answer my own question just in case someone else has the same trouble - I had a defective phone. Exchanged yesterday after troubleshooting with ATT tech support and widgets are up and running.
