Android Central Question

This is a phone I purchased new but stopped using for over a year. I was unable to get the phone to accept my Gmail account with a password I knew was correct so I reset the phone. I was able to enter my Gmail address and it seemed to accept my password. Yet, I could not proceed past that point. I got the message saying the phone had been reset and I need to enter the email used to register the phone. It was a loop that I went through 2-3 times. My recovery email received an email telling me how I could complete the setup by downloading more Google apps, but I am lost in the email loop. Can someone help?

Welcome to Android Central! It sounds like the phone might not have been brand new when you got it, since what you describe is Factory Reset Protection. The Moto E 2nd generation was released in 2015, so it's 4 years old. Did you only get it a couple of years ago?

You'd have to enter the Google account/password of the account associated with the phone. If that's some old Google account of yours, you need to remember that information. If it's someone else's account, then you have to get their help.

Time gets away from me. More than likely, I purchased the phone in 2015 and used it until the Pixel 2 came out and switched. I’ve been using the Pixel until two weeks ago when it was lost.

I used the same Gmail account to set up both phones. It seemed to take on the Moto E but after I entered the password, it would ask for the email used to register the phone. I am the original owner. I’m positive I bought it brand new, not refurb or used. i received a message in the recovery email that was basically a security warning that someone had signed into a Moto E using my linked Gmail account. It’s confusing me.

That happens when you use the same email to sign into different devices or even same after factory reset , it just a protection that this email is being used and if it seems suspicious to take action.
