Unauthorised Factory reset

[Android Central Question]

Yesterday while in my pocket my phone seemed to spontaneously do its own factory reset- wiping all of my photos and data, my apps, and most of my contacts (but not all?!). My phone was in my pocket and I first noticed something unusual when my phone rang with an unfamiliar ringtone. Help! Any ideas on why this is and whether anything is recoverable?

Maybe too many accidental unlocks in the pocket caused this , go settings>lock screen>secure lock settings and make sure not toggled on? Which device?

Welcome to Android Central! Were you keeping your important data and photos backed up or synced anywhere on a regular basis? We can't emphasize enough how important that is, and this is a perfect example why.

any chance someone you know have access to your google account? do you have any work applications installed? where I work if I install their apps - even to get work emails, I must give the permission to wipe my phone

Another thought -- could you be logged in as a guest profile instead of your own profile?
