I have the AT&T variant running 4.1.2. I bought it May 10th and it's be running perfectly since then. All of a sudden this morning when I try to open the settings I get a message saying, "Unfortunately, Settings has stopped".

In every other way, the software seems fine. This is kind of a problem because how can I do a factory reset without access to the settings? I've already done a full back up to the SD card using Helium (which I can't unmount without access to the settings come to think of it).

Does anyone know how to do a factory reset without using the settings menu?:(

No. The phone has not been rooted. Is there a way to re-install the Android update?

I found a strange work around. Apparently asking Google Now (voice?) to open settings still works. I just can't use the settings app. It is just so weird because everything else on the phone is working like a charm. (shrug).

I ended up doing a full Helium (Carbon) back up and then a factory reset. That fixed the issue and it has not returned.

Updated Google Search and now I'm getting the message again. SOB. I'm at work and Helium/Carbon is on my home machine which means I can't do a backup from here

I wish I knew if this was a JB issue or an LGOG issue.

Turn the phone off then hold power and volume down til home buttons flash then let go of power n keep holding volume down until it boots into recovery then use volume buttons to navigate to factory reset and use menu button to select it

Turn off the phone. Hold volume down and power on until a menu comes up. Volume down to highlight and power to select the option.
