Is this function ( ability to search for anything in your phone when you type any on the google search box ie contact, apps) gone on S3 for att as well as part of the legal fight with the rotten apple ?

If you updated recently, then function is gone but there are workarounds like Google Gesture Search.

Most AT&T users updated to the CALG1 update over a month ago and lost universal search with it. Yes, it is directly due to the legal fight with Apple.

Most likely. You'd have to find some pretty old stock to not have the latest firmware on it by now...it's been well over a month I believe.

You can either test the universal search or go to settings/about device and see what build number it has. The old build was CALEM and the new build, without universal search, is CALG1.
