Unlock - Screen Off

Folks,
Apologies if this has been posted.
I was having an issue where I'd unlock the phone and then the screen would almost immediately power down. I've tracked down the cause. I use my phone in landscape mode often. (Though the issue happens regardless if it is landscape or portrait).
When something is covering the upper left corner (as looking at the phone in portrait mode) when unlocking the phone, the screen goes blank. In landscape mode this happens often as my palm may be covering this area. (In portrait mode, sometimes my thumb may be covering that area)
Is this by design or is this a bug?

Sounds like you may be covering the proximity sensor. If so, the phone would turn of the screen like it does when you answer a call and put the phone to your ear. Just a thought...
