Unlocked Essential phone in the US?

I just read that the new Essential phone (designed by Andy Rubin) will be exclusive to Sprint in the US; however, I thought there might be an unlocked version as well. Anyone have any info?

Like the Google Pixel is exclusive to Verizon, Essential Phone is exclusive to Sprint. And like the Google Pixel, Essential will also sell this phone unlocked for use on all major US carriers.

There will be an unlocked version. Sprint is just the exclusive US carrier partner that will carry the phone.
