Unlocked: Now how do I program 3/4G Frequencies??

Hi all,

Purchased an Inspire 4G new from Satan ... ahem, pardon me, AT&T... March 2010. Went round and round with them about my bill for months, and finally got T-Mobile with twice the features for a quarter of the price. Found a program that *for the most part* effortlessly unlocked my phone via radio rom exploit. Phone seems to work good for the most part, EXCEPT I'm always in Edge mode, even when my phone is set for "wcdma only" or "wcdma preferred." Have a friend who works for T-Mobile, and while their tech support line didn't have a clue what needed to be done to make it work, he said I need to program the specific frequencies (he says 1700 for 3g and 2100 for 4g) into the phone, but he's not sure how. He says he's seen it done before with this specific model. Found a couple of articles with a code to punch in for the hidden menus to do so, but the code just "resets" my dialer back to blank. How exactly do I get into this menu to change the frequency setting so I can get OUT OF EDGE HELL!!!!! LOL My Nokia xPress Music Red moves faster some days. Gee, and I thought my spotty service with ATT was a pain! All input is appreciated.

Try creating a new APN for T-Mobile. The settings are here:

Support: Verify the Access Point Name (APN) and internet data connection - T-Mobile myTouch 3G / myTouch 3G Slide / myTouch 4G

You still may not get anything more than EDGE. There seems to be an ongoing argument over that. You'll have to see for yourself.

BTW, there is no way to change radio frequencies, they are built into the hardware. Your friend that has "seen it done before" must be mistaken.

Friend of mine bought a brand new at the time iPhone 4 with ATT. Got pissed and went to T-Mobile. The fool is still on Edge only. Lol

APN is correct, but thanks for the verification.

My friend ^^^^ (stated above) introduced me to the individual running his HTC on T-Mo's 4G. He mentioned that Wireless Trends in Springfield, MO was the one that had changed his settings. Looking in the specifications he has, *supposedly, according to the WT documentation*, the phone is capable of running on the 1700/2100 frequencies used by T-Mo when correctly set up. It even shows a screenshot of the menu to select the settings, but once again, the appropriate *#*# code wasn't provided to get to said menu. I didn't think to Xerox the doc's, otherwise I would have posted the screenshot on here for reference purposes.

I would simply take mine to WT as well (as I only live an hour from there) but I seriously don't have an extra hundred bucks to wave in front of some lazy tech at a mall kiosk for ten minutes of his time.

Who knows, maybe his device is modified internally. I really don't know. He doesn't seem to either, he's the second owner of it (I had originally thought he'd bought it new) so there's hard telling where it's been and what's been done to it.

Everything that I have read and understand about electronics is that the wireless frequencies are part of the hardware antenna built into the device. I believe that WT would have had to take apart the phone and physically replace the antenna, if that's even possible. That would explain the cost. No one should be able to justify charging $100 if it's just some changed settings.

Just checked out Wireless Trendz website and they are indeed a phone repair center. It is very possible that they could have swapped out the antenna.

3G/4G will not work on an Inspire on anything other than AT&T network. The 2 carriers run on different bands, which is hardware related so there's nothing u can do, you'll only get Edge speeds

Inthat case then yes they most likely took out the radio chip to a t mobile chip set

And be sure your apn settings are correct I'm no fan of ios but there's a video on YouTube with soldier knows best switching the lte version of the ipad from Verizon goat&t all he did was switch the apn the principal mite be the same???

Hey I was in the at&t store earlier and they had a Guy with a t mobile vibrant and it had 3g speed he got a special similar off the net I'm assuming it reset the apn settings I didn't get to check it out BC it was locked up and I was trying to access the boot loader for recovery but it wouldn't go into recovery

Most devices don't have all those bands. The Vibrant is one of the few that will work on AT&T and T-Mobile.

Interesting seems Samsung put in al all points chip and its just set by apn instead of encoding specific bands to the chip basically locking it

I am having this problem, but in reverse......I have an unlocked Galaxy S III mini, UK verson that apears to have been slated to be a TMobile phone.......it's brand new out the box, I am it's first owner.....but I am trying to use it on AT&T ( I happen to like "Satan" thanks.....lol) and I'm not getting beyond "EDGE" either, when I get 4g on my Samsung S II (not unlocked)...........anyone have any ideas for me?

GSM iPhones are not location specific (except the China model) and will work on all carrier frequencies. If he's only getting edge, there's likely an issue with the phone.
